Georg Grasegger (1873–1927) – The rediscovery of an Expressionist sculptor
With more than 100 exhibits, the exhibition approaches this today largely forgotten artist from Partenkirchen, who created an extraordinarily diverse body of work as a professor in Cologne: extensive architectural sculpture projects in Cologne and other cities, interior designs for museums and breweries, monuments and fountains, grave monuments, architecture-related works for church and cultural spaces, remarkable portraits, small-scale sculptures, plaques, and medals.
His portraits and sculptures are characterized by an intense sense of tension that extends into expressionist exaggeration. The defining features of the depicted people, metaphorical figures, or religious and mythological motifs are sharply and precisely rendered, always executed with great craftsmanship.
With sculptures in wood, stone, bronze, majolica, and earthenware, as well as plaster models and photographs of works from his estate and a video projection spanning three floors, this retrospective for the first time creates a comprehensive picture of the sculptor’s life and work.
